Shifting Your Emotions When Needed
If you find yourself experiencing negative emotions when dealing with team members, as a leader, it is up to you to shift your emotions to improve the interaction. What you do in the moment makes a huge difference for what happens next.
Step away from the situation and try the following:
Journal about what is bothering you. We’ve all done that little trick where we type out something we want to email and never send it. You can do the same with journaling. Getting the thoughts and feelings out of your head and down on paper can really improve your mood.
Smile/laugh. This seems simple, but another great mood booster. Watch a funny video or listen to a podcast, anything that will bring a smile to your face.
Speak with a colleague/teammate/coach. Find someone else, not in the situation, and just chat. It will take your mind off what is going on and help to center you. Talk about something positive or fun coming up, so you start to release the feelings of negativity.
